Like any teenager I have been a bit of a rebel in my own way. I remember the first time I wanted to dye my hair darker, my mum told me that I will regret it and that my hair colour suited me. But of course, being a 15 year old eager to try new things I still went ahead and dyed my light ash brown hair, black… Not a very good idea. My peachy skin appeared ghastly and pale and my hair looked like a wig. I hated it! But soon enough I discovered fake tan (which was a disaster at the start) which sort of toned down the contrast of my skin and dark hair. So a few years passed and I kept dying my hair dark browns and blacks, straightening, curling, blow drying, teasing and shampooing my hair every single day, and not surprisingly my waist long beautiful hair started to fight back. My hair began to thin out and become VERY dry. In year 12 I realised what I was doing so I stopped immediately. I stopped using heating tools and hair spray, but I still kept washing my hair every day.
At the end of year 12 I decided I wanted to try out the new hair trend; ombre. I went to the hair dresser and they tried to bleach the ends of my hair a blonde/caramel colour which obviously turned a brassy orange from the 3 years of black hair dye. I wasn’t very happy but I left it alone as I didn’t want to damage it further. So after a year of occasionally dying my brassy ends a brown colour to match my roots, I also stopped shampooing my hair every day. After about a month my hair immediately felt softer. But I still wasn’t happy as my hair was still dry and thin. So I searched online and discovered home-made hair masks. I tried with olive oil first and that was magic! My hair was so soft and shiny! After a while I started mixing and trying new ingredients to help my hair. But the best so far has been the one I have been using for the past 2 months.
My hair has been split end free even though I straighten most days, and has been incredibly soft, shiny and the best part is it has become thicker! After a few weeks of using homemade hair masks I noticed tiny hairs grow from around my scalp and now my hair has been the healthiest and thickest it has been since I was 15 (5 years ago!) And I’m trying to get my natural hair colour back too. These hair masks have helped fade away some of the hair colour but I still have a long way to go.
Instead of investing hundreds of dollars on hair creams and treatments, I just use the things from my kitchen to feed my hair once a week. Nature’s food is better than those treatments made in factories!
Ingredients for my super hair mask:
1 tablespoon virgin olive oil
1/2 tablespoon cold pressed virgin coconut oil
1 egg
1 tablespoon honey
Method:
1. Heat the olive oil and the coconut oil in a pan.
2. Take off heat and leave aside to cool down a bit so you don’t burn yourself.
3. Mix the honey with an egg in a bowl.
4. First apply the warm oils to your hair starting from the ends and working your way up to your scalp. Make sure to massage it into your scalp to promote blood flow and feed your hair roots.
5. After your hair is completely covered in oil, start adding the egg and honey mixture to your scalp and make your way down to your ends.
6. Completely cover and put your hair up into a knot or bun and glad wrap your hair.
7. You can also wrap your already glad wrapped hair with a head scarf or towel to make sure it gets heated so the hair mask can better absorb into your hair.
8. Leave for as long as you like. The longer you leave it the better! Repeat once a week or twice a week for extremely damaged hair.
9. Wash hair as you would normally do and towel or air dry.
You’ll defiantly feel the difference even after the first application!
NOTE: The hair mask may slightly fade hair dye from hair!
