Our mini winter escape at Sea World Resort Gold Coast: What we liked and what we’d change
21 August 2026 by Emilia Rossi in Travel

We desperately needed to get away from Melbourne’s grey winter. The whole family craved warmer weather, sunshine and the chance to get into our swimmers without freezing.

So I booked a six-night family holiday on the Gold Coast, staying at the Sea World Resort through Luxury Escapes. I’ve used Luxury Escapes before. It’s quick, easy and convenient when organising flights and accommodation together.

We loved the Gold Coast, and the Sea World Resort worked well as a base for the days we spent at Movie World, Sea World and Wet’n’Wild. But it probably isn’t somewhere I would choose to stay again.

The Gold Coast in winter was perfect

We travelled outside the school holidays to avoid crowds, traffic and long queues at the theme parks.

The weather was great, with most days in the low 20s. There was plenty of sunshine and very little wind. It was warm enough to swim and spend a lot of time outdoors without feeling hot and completely drained.

It did get cooler in the evenings, so bringing a few light layers was a good idea.

The Sea World Resort was convenient but basic

The resort lacked the small touches I expect from this type of stay, and the soundproofing was terribly poor. We could hear guests next door, above us and in the walkway. If I can hear someone sneeze next door, that’s not a good sign!

I expect the accommodation itself to feel like part of the holiday. I also take some responsibility for my expectations because I should have checked reviews and ratings. Instead, I relied mainly on the Luxury Escapes package and the word “resort”.

There wasn’t a lot for the kids to do at the resort. There was no playground, little pool equipment and not much daytime entertainment to keep them busy. There was plenty of green space to run around, but I never really felt we could comfortably spend a full day at the resort with the children.

If your plan is to have breakfast and spend most of the day at the theme parks, it’s a good base. But if you want lazy resort days with plenty for the kids to do while you relax, that wasn’t what we experienced.

Despite there being various dining venues on site, only one offered a buffet breakfast during our stay. We had to wait in line for at least 30 minutes, and doing that every morning with hungry kids was not my idea of a relaxing holiday.

After the first day, we changed our approach. We bought breakfast items to keep in the room, ate something simple before leaving and then had brunch or lunch elsewhere. It ended up being much easier and gave us more flexibility.

The dinner buffet had a lovely variety of food, but at $199 for the four of us, I struggled with the value when eating with younger children. My six-year-old ate five prawns, a little salad and a scoop of ice cream, which made the price of her meal fairly hard to justify.

For adults who love a buffet and will genuinely make the most of it, the value equation may be completely different. We’re not big eaters, so for our family I’d prefer to spend that money elsewhere.

We’re enjoying a relaxing drink while we chill out and watch the sunset.

Planning the theme parks made a huge difference

I used ChatGPT to help us loosely plan our theme park days. Rather than turning up and randomly deciding which ride to do next, I gave it information about our children, the weather and the day’s opening hours, and asked it to create a schedule.

This worked well at the busier parks like Movie World because we could prioritise the attractions the kids wanted to experience first. One thing worth checking before leaving each morning is the opening and closing time. During our trip, some of the operating hours were much shorter than I expected, with some days running from around 10 am to 3 pm. When you only have a few hours, having even a loose plan helps you make better use of the day.

Movie World probably had the most impressive arrival of the three parks we visited. You could see one of the enormous rollercoasters before you had even entered the park, and the entrance immediately felt loud, busy and full of activity.

A quick family pose at Movie World.

There were some great rides and areas for the kids, but I found there were very few places where you could simply sit down and relax for a while. You do a lot of walking at Movie World. I clocked close to 20,000 steps, so comfortable shoes are definitely worthwhile.

Sea World is quite spread out, but staying at the Sea World Resort made accessing the theme park ridiculously easy. Once we were up and ready for the day, we simply walked through the resort lobby, crossed the bridge and headed straight into Sea World. With kids, that level of convenience really does make a difference.

There was also a lovely area near the entrance with a treetop-style forest maze and a water-play section that the kids loved.

Because the resort itself didn’t have much for them to do, this little area became somewhere I could easily imagine returning to. It gave them somewhere nearby to play and burn off some energy.

Wet’n’Wild was my favourite

Wet’n’Wild was much more relaxing and chilled than the other two theme parks, and I’m glad we visited it last.

I absolutely loved the wave pool. Every 15 minutes or so, the waves would start. I had so much fun being in the water with the kids, jumping over the waves as they came through.

The best part, though, was a large family water-play area right in the middle of the park. The kids entertained themselves there for at least two hours.

There were three different water-play areas, toilets nearby, shaded sections and plenty of seating. We could sit down, dip our toes in the water, walk around in the sunshine and have our picnic while the kids played. That little stretch of the afternoon was probably my favourite moment from all three parks. The kids were happy, we were relaxed, the weather was beautiful and nobody needed to rush anywhere.

The food options at Wet’n’Wild were very limited, so I was particularly glad we had packed our own picnic lunch and snacks.

If I had more time on another trip, Wet’n’Wild is the one park I could easily visit twice in the same week.

Would I stay at the Sea World Resort again?

No, but I would absolutely visit the Gold Coast again, and I’d happily go back for another winter escape.

The Sea World Resort worked for what we needed. It gave us six nights in a convenient location while we spent most of our days at the theme parks and exploring the Gold Coast.

The accommodation is part of the holiday. I want a place where we can enjoy a slow afternoon, where the kids have things to do and where coming back to the room feels relaxing, not just practical.
