When I take my photos to use online, there are things I keep in mind to ensure I take the best possible photos. Below are some things I take into consideration every time I take a picture.
Lighting
Lighting is the most important element in taking a good photo. When I photograph people, I try to light up their eyes and a real trick to achieve this is asking them to turn their nose towards the light.
It’s hard getting the lighting perfect when photographing my jewellery. But I found the best place to take photos of my jewellery is outside in the late afternoon. I also use a large white board, which I position next to the jewellery, to reflect the light back onto it. This technique ensures the jewellery has enough light as well eliminating any harsh shadows.
Composition
If you keep the photo simple, the viewer can focus quickly on individual elements in the photo. But if the photo is busy with too many objects you can lose the attention of your viewers very fast.
I enjoy paying attention to the style and composition other lifestyle and fashion bloggers use in their photos. I especially enjoy browsing through their photos on Instagram where the photography style is always changing.
Camera Settings
Try staying away from the automatic setting on your camera and learn how to use the manual setting. I had to attend a photography workshop to find out how to use my manual configuration. I’m now comfortable with my manual camera settings, and find it easier to control the exposure, aperture and shutter speed.
Your camera settings should allow you to achieve the ideal exposure. The aperture (also called f-stop) is the size of the hole that allows the light in, so the number in the camera with the decimal point is the aperture setting. The shutter speed regulates and controls how much light is allowed in.
Below are examples of photos that I’m proud to say I took, once again I’m not claiming to be a great photographer, but want to show that I do have a particular style and am always learning on how to take even better photos which I can share with you online.
